Your first 90 days of Facebook ads: what to expect

By Seth Shouse · October 28, 2026 · 3 min read

The biggest reason local businesses quit Facebook ads too early is that nobody told them what the first few months actually look like. They expect leads on day one, get a slow first week and pull the plug.

Here's what the first 90 days usually look like when it's done right.

Month 1: build it and launch it

The first few weeks are mostly setup. It's not glamorous, but it's what everything else stands on.

Week 1: plan and shoot. We pick the offer, the service area and the type of customer you want more of. Then we film on location: you, your team and your work.

Week 2: build. The footage gets edited into several ads. The landing page gets built. The CRM, instant texts and notifications get set up and tested. Tracking gets connected so Meta can see which ads produce leads.

Week 3: launch. Ads go live. The first leads start coming in.

Week 4: first look. We review what came in. Which ads got watched, what leads cost, and whether those leads were the kind you want.

Expect the early numbers to bounce around. Meta is still learning who to show your ads to.

Month 2: test and cut

This is where the real work happens. With a few weeks of data, patterns show up:

  • One or two videos are clearly beating the rest.
  • One audience or area produces better leads.
  • The offer is working, or it needs a tweak.

We turn off what isn't working and put more behind what is. We try a new hook on the best video, or a different offer, one change at a time so we can tell what made the difference.

This is also when your feedback matters most. Tell me which leads turned into booked jobs. Ads that get cheap leads who never book aren't winning ads.

Month 3: double down

By month three you should have a clearer picture of what works for your business. Now the focus is on:

  • Putting more budget behind the winners, if you have room for more work.
  • Fresh creative. Even good ads wear out as the same people see them over and over. New footage from another shoot keeps things working.
  • Tightening follow-up. Looking at how fast leads are answered and where they fall off.

Why three months

This is why I start clients with a three-month term, then month to month after that. Month one is mostly building. Month two is testing. Month three is when you can judge the results fairly. Cutting it off at week three throws away everything the first weeks taught us.

What good progress looks like

There are no guarantees in advertising, and anyone who promises exact results is guessing. But here's what I watch for:

  • Cost per lead trending down as weak ads get cut.
  • Lead quality going up: more people who answer, show up and book.
  • Booked jobs you can trace back to the ads.
  • A few clear winning ads you can build on.

What you need to do

Your part is small, but it matters:

  1. Be there for the shoot.
  2. Call your leads back fast. The automations buy you time, but people still want to talk to you. Here's why speed matters.
  3. Tell me what booked. That's how we know what's actually working.
