Landing page vs website: where should your ads send people?

By Seth Shouse · October 28, 2026 · 3 min read

You're paying for every click. Where those clicks land decides whether they turn into booked jobs or just disappear.

What's the difference?

A website is your storefront. It has your services, your story, your gallery, your contact info and probably a dozen menu links. It's built for people who want to look around.

A landing page has one job. One offer, one form or calendar, and nothing else to click. It's built for people who just saw your ad and are deciding whether to reach out.

Why landing pages usually win for ads

Think about what happens when someone taps your ad for a "free roof inspection" and lands on your homepage.

They see your logo, a slideshow, a menu with Services, About, Gallery, Reviews and Blog, and maybe a form way down at the bottom. Nothing about the free inspection they just tapped on. They're confused, they don't want to dig, and they leave.

Now picture them landing on a page that says "Free roof inspection in Oklahoma City" at the top, shows a short video of your crew, lists what the inspection includes and has a short form right there. They know exactly what to do.

Fewer choices, more leads.

What a landing page needs

None of this is complicated. It's just usually missing.

  • A headline that matches the ad. If the ad says free inspection, the page says free inspection.
  • Fast on a phone. Most of your ad traffic is on phones, often on cell signal. If it takes forever to load, they're gone.
  • What you do and where, right away. "Lawn care in Edmond and north OKC," not "Welcome to our website."
  • Real photos and video. Your crew, your work, not stock images.
  • Proof. A few real reviews or a quick testimonial.
  • A short form or calendar. Name, phone and maybe one question. Easy to finish with a thumb.
  • No distractions. No full menu and no links to your Facebook page. One way forward.

When your website is the right place

Your website still matters. It's where people go when they:

  • Search your business name.
  • Want to look around before deciding.
  • Come from your Google Business Profile.
  • Get referred by a friend and want to check you out.

It should be clean, fast and easy to contact you from. It just shouldn't be the place paid ad traffic lands.

What happens after the form

A landing page is only half the job. The form should feed straight into a CRM that sends the lead an instant text and email and notifies you right away. A great page with slow follow-up still loses jobs. Read why speed to lead matters.

Can I build it myself?

You can. Plenty of tools let you build simple landing pages. The important parts are the message match, the speed and the follow-up behind it. If you'd rather not deal with it, that's what I do.
